MU Children's Hospital's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation provides comprehensive, personalized care for children with physical or cognitive impairments due to injury or genetic illness. This division offers a multidisciplinary approach to treatment that includes physicians and other health care experts from a wide variety of pediatric sub-specialties. The goal is to give our young patients specialized care that will maximize their functional abilities.

Each staff member is specifically trained to care for children. Children recovering from an injury or in need of rehabilitation due to a genetic disorder often require care from a wide variety of specialists. Each child receives care from a team specifically gathered to meet his or her individual needs. The pediatric rehabilitation team treats patients with spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain/spine injury, orthopaedic multi-trauma, spasticity and amputation. The department offers a pediatric cerebral palsy clinic, spine bifida clinic, muscular dystrophy clinic and a wheelchair seating and positioning clinic.

The new Children’s Therapy Center across from Women’s and Children’s Hospital will include classroom’s, a gym, staff space and a new playground designed specifically for children with health-related obstacles. The outside playground will include a xylofun game, chimes, ring-a-bell, bongo drums, walking trail with obstacles, play animals that mist water, a climbing rock and more. The inside playground will include a Braille clock and letters, a finger maze, mirror panel and a roller table. MU Health Care will be home to one of only three therapeutic playgrounds in the nation.
